The conduct of FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, during the Women’s World Cup 2023 has raised eyebrows. He has requested police in both New Zealand and Australia to receive him with the protocol usually reserved for heads of state, according to The Guardian Australia.
In New Zealand, there have been occasions where the official has requested a police escort, but the police believe that it could cause traffic congestion if granted.
Meanwhile in Australia, Infantino requested police escorts from the Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales states, where he will be attending the matches. However, all three states have declined the request. The police in Queensland have expressed concerns that providing an escort for the head of FIFA would create unnecessary disruption to the community.

“The Queensland Police have received a request to provide a police escort for Mr. Infantino during the Women’s World Cup 2023,” said a spokesperson. “The escort request has been declined as it would create unnecessary disruption to the community.”
The police in Victoria have also rejected the request, stating that there is no precedent for such an escort and it is only reserved for heads of state. A spokesperson for the state said, “After evaluating the request based on our state’s standards, we have declined. The police escort in Victoria is solely reserved for heads of state.”
The New South Wales police, on the other hand, have shown more flexibility. However, they have emphasized that they will only provide a single vehicle and Infantino will have to pay for the service. The police in this state also mentioned that the service will only be provided on match days and the vehicle will move discreetly on the roads.
On social media, fans have debated Infantino’s request, with most supporting the stance of Australia. They believe that the event, no matter how significant, is still confined to the realm of sports.
